An orthopedic specialist is a surgeon who diagnoses and treats acute, chronic, traumatic, and overuse injuries, and diseases of the joints, bones and muscles. Orthopedic surgery is a branch of general surgery. Orthopedic surgeons deal with muscles, tendons, ligaments and the skeletal system. They may treat the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees and hips, ankles and spine. They may perform surgery as a treatment for a condition or to replace worn or damaged joints. They may specialize in orthopedic surgical procedures, sports medicine, adult or pediatric orthopedics, or a particular area of the body.
At South County Orthopedic Specialists in Laguna Woods, California, all of our orthopedic surgeons are fellowship trained.
What does it mean to be “Fellowship-Trained”?
After becoming an orthopedic surgeon, a doctor may choose to refine their skills and focus on a specific area or subspecialty that is important to them. To specialize, the doctor will apply to a fellowship program.
A fellowship program provides the opportunity to train with national and international experts, and learn the latest surgical and patient care techniques, and there may be a research component. Orthopedic fellowships may focus on the adult or pediatric foot and ankle, hand and upper limb, joint replacement and reconstruction, trauma, spine, or sports medicine.
